Carlos Salas holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis on finance from Western Illinois University and a Master’s degree in Development, specialized in Public Politics, Local Development and Decentralization from the Institute of Social Studies, in the Netherlands. He also holds a Diploma in Managing Innovation from the University of Leipzig, Germany and from Universidad Técnica Nacional in Costa Rica.
He has over 25 years of professional experience and is specialized in Management, Business Strategy, Capacity Building for micro and small businesses (MSMEs), Strategic Planning, Institutional Program Strengthening, both nationally and internationally.
As a founding partner of M&C Group (www.mcgrupo.com), he has been accumulating significant experience since 1988 as a consultant in several organizations and international agencies such as the Inter-American Development Bank (BID), Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) from the BID, CARE International, International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Organization of the Americas States (OAS), the UN Development Program (UNPD), the European Union, the World Bank, KFW (Brazil), the INCAE Business School and more.
He has developed and formulated various strategies for the incorporation of micro and small businesses into markets, conducting some market researches, dynamic sectors analysis and chain value analysis for the integration into the corporate world. His experience includes the development and implementation of business incubation models both internally and externally and the promoting partnership strategies and business linkages.
With an extensive experience in performance management, negotiation and facilitation of processes aimed at the development of sustainable business strategies, Salas has collaborated in different countries in the region, in the formulation of innovative plans for commercial uses of biodiversity, with studies of the international market and chain value analysis in interesting market niches that allow a sustainable usage of the resources.
His experience also comprises the design of various competitive funds for the promotion of competitiveness and business alliances for MSMEs in Central America and Dominican Republic.
Salas currently the Executive Director of the Costa Rican Fishing Federation (FECOP) and collaborates in the technological upgrading of the commercial longline fleet in Costa Rica towards much more selective fishing techniques in sustainable markets.
