Dr. Luis Bourillón has worked in marine conservation and management of natural resources for almost 30 years. His experience ranges from the ecology of marine mammals, islands conservation, to the management of artisanal fisheries. He has been part of the board of users of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) since 2000, and has promoted working with COBI, the AC fisheries eco-certification programs in Mexico. This resulted in the certification, as sustainable fishery, of the lobster fishery of Baja California by the MSC in 2004, and the lobster fishery in the Mexican Caribbean in 2013. He also participated in the certification process of the sardine fishery of the Gulf Of California. Bourillon was closely involved in the process of improving these three fisheries to maintain the validation of the MSC certification.
Bourillon holds a doctorate in natural resource management from the University of Arizona, an MS in ecology and conservation of natural resources by the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM-Campus Guaymas), and a biology degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He is currently an independent consultant, working for the MSC where he is responsible for the fisheries relationship in Mexico, Caribbean and Central America.
